Chapter 7: A New Life

It wasn't like Jack, but as soon as the sun was in the sky he called and postponed the meeting that he had that morning, claiming that he was sick and he had been up all night throwing up. The company understood but was worried about him. It wasn't like Jack to call out of work. Thinking about it, Jack couldn't remember a time when he had ever called out or flaked on a meeting.

He hadn't even noticed that the day had passed. Jack was sure he had fallen asleep for a few hours off and on; each time he woke up confused about where he was and called out for Jasmine. The last time, the doorbell ringing woke him.

Jack got up from the couch. Jasmine stood on the porch in a light purple dress, matching purse hanging off her shoulder and perched on matching high heels.

“Oh god, don't tell me you forgot about our date tonight. It’s already six,” she told him, covering her mouth when she realized that he had just woken up.

“I didn't forget. I just didn't realize how late it was. If you don't mind coming in and waiting while I take a quick shower I should be ready in a half hour,” he told her, blushing a little. His shirt and slacks were hopelessly wrinkled. He knew she could tell that he hadn't slept well.

“What is the matter with you Jack? You look like hell.” She put a hand on her hip when she walked into the kitchen and heard the front door close.

“Nothing. Just tired.” He tried brushing it off, not wanting to bring up his fear from the night before.

“I know that's a lie, Jack. I went to your work; you weren't picking up your cell so I knew I would be able to reach you at work. At least I thought I could. When I got there they told me you called out of a very important meeting.” He looked up at her in surprise, seeing frustration on her face.

“You really think you can hide things from me? I always find out everything. What is going on with you?” she asked, using a softer tone. Although she wanted to yell at him, she knew she had no right to when she was hiding something really important from him.

“Okay. What was your appointment for?” he asked, knowing he was running out of time for the shower.

“A regular check up. A yearly physical.” Jasmine found it easier and easier to lie to him. Though she felt guilty about it, there was nothing else she could do. She hadn't even planned on coming over, she had planned on standing him up, but she couldn't do it.

“You couldn't have told me last night? Jasmine we used to talk about everything. I know it’s going to take a while for us to get to where we were, but I want you to know that you can come to me with anything. Good or bad,” Jack whispered to her.
